The author argues that whereas the New York school was predominantly based on the appropriation of mass media imagery, from onwards Tiller turned to the appropriation of fine art imagery.4/5(1).

In Tillers developed a system of painting in which multiple canvasboard panels fit together to form large, gridded works. The individual boards are numbered from 1 to infinity and are considered to be part of a continually-expanding whole, collectively titled “The Book of Power”.

Since the early s, Imants Tillers has worked almost exclusively on a program of works comprising small individual canvasboards, conceived as part of his major opus, The Book of Power – an ongoing hybrid sequence of appropriations, the core motivation of which is to invert the outmoded, if still prevailing order of centre to province.

This painting is from 'The book of power' series of multi-canvas appropriation works which Imants Tillers began in and still continues. Tillers cites the work of other artists to question authorial originality, how images circulate and to investigate ideas about location and place.

This would become the starting point of Tillers’ Book of Power, which is what he eventually called his canvas board project.
